Erosion

Practical tactics to improve ground cover and ensure soil preservation following successive low rainfall seasons

This GRDC funded project aims to develop locally relevant information that will help landholders make informed decisions to manage and re-establish ground cover and reduce soil loss following drought and improve soil preservation.

8 grower case studies from across the southern region are under development to showcase farmer applied strategies for re-stablishing eroded soils.

This digital hub will follow the progress of two farmer paddocks in NSW and Victoria, over 18 months with soil aggregation, ground cover and biomass assessments captured as indicators of the success of treatments.

NSW
This farm is located northwest of Wentworth, with very low rainfall and high kangaroo pressure during drought.

Victoria
This farm is located west of Merbein South in the Millewa.

Erosion Risk

Paddock measurements in Autumn and Summer 2021 have helped identify the erosion risk at this site based on dry aggregates and groundcover percentages.

NSW strategies and paddock restoration experience after drought

Description In this episode, Chris McDonough visits cousins Nigel Baird and Peter Baird in a paddock badly drifting in the 2018 and 2019 drought.  They’re talking about the GRDC investment ‘Practical tactics to improve ground cover and ensure soil preservation following successive low rainfall seasons.’ The Baird’s is a remarkable story of recovery. Following an …
